Microaggressions- Papercuts and Gaping Wounds

Updated: Sep 18, 2023

The slights are as soft as a whisper but sting like a slap. The little digs here and there, the invalidations of accomplishments, the assault on individual identity, and the views that reactions are oversensitive and even dramatic- subversive insensitivity, intentional or unintentional, lies rampant in our society and in our workplaces. These subtle, indirect statements or actions are referred to as microaggressions, usually directed at members of underrepresented and marginalized groups. These statements and actions (brilliantly referred to as "papercuts" by Farah Harris, one of our amazing guests!) include microinsults, microinvalidations, and microassaults. Microaggressions cause pain, erode trust, and contribute to the petri dish of toxicity in the workplace and in life! Farah Harris, author of The Color of Emotional Intelligence (Elevating Our Self and Social Awareness to Address Inequities), is a psychotherapist and expert on workplace belonging and well-being dedicated to disrupting unhealthy work environments. She is the founder and CEO of Working Well Daily, a company that approaches workplace belonging and well-being from a psycho-social and emotional intelligence lens. Farah is a speaker and a consultant. Jessica Fink, founder of regulatory compliance solutions firm, BlueKey Solutions, is a regulatory compliance expert and licensed customs broker with over 20 years of experience in US Customs, FDA, Foreign Trade Zone, TTB, and several other government agencies, A lifelong resident of the Louisville metro area, Jessica holds roles within the nonprofit community as the compliance officer for Workwell Industries and as the advocacy chair for the community impact committee with the Junior League of Louisville. Our guests and your hosts dig into the topic of microaggressions, discuss ways allies can help curb that behavior, validate your own feelings, and move forward in a more inclusive, less divisive workplace- and life!
